Language learning is a journey, and the release of Duolingo’s 2023 Language Report offers a glimpse of the exciting world of linguistic exploration. The report sheds light on the most popular languages studied on the platform, and the global trends that have shaped language learning in the past year.

Korean has seen a surge in popularity this year, leaping to the sixth spot among the most popular languages studied on Duolingo. This growth is attributed to the rising interest in Asian languages among young learners. Similarly, Hindi has seen a two-place jump from last year, with 8.4 million people actively studying the language on the platform.

However, English still reigns supreme, topping the charts in 122 countries and remaining the most popular language studied on Duolingo. 49% of learners are motivated to study English for educational or professional purposes. Interestingly, 40% of English learners hail from India, with education being their primary motivation for language learning.

Additionally, Duolingo’s Year in Review experience provides an interactive visualization of each individual’s language-learning journey. This feature assigns eight different learner personas based on learners’ data, such as hours spent learning and the courses taken. Through this feature, learners can relive their year and share personalized cards on social media to commemorate their accomplishments.

For teachers, the report highlights the importance of language learning in the classroom. The enthusiasm of Indian learners to explore languages, cultures, and personal growth is an opportunity teachers can leverage to create meaningful learning experiences for their students. Additionally, the Duolingo platform provides an engaging way for teachers to incorporate language-learning into their classrooms.

Language learning is a journey that expands beyond borders and cultures. With Duolingo’s Language Report and Year in Review experience, teachers can leverage the enthusiasm of their students to create meaningful learning experiences that will bridge cultural divides.
