Khan Academy and Instructure Partner to Harness the Power of Generative AI in the Classroom

EdTech and AI are transforming the way we teach and learn. Instructure and Khan Academy have just announced an exciting new partnership that will bring together the powerful combination of Instructure’s market-leading learning management system, Canvas, and Khan Academy’s AI-powered student tutor and teaching assistant, Khanmigo. This integrated solution will give teachers and students using the Canvas learning environment the opportunity to benefit from the transformative power of generative AI.

Generative AI is a powerful tool for improving student success, amplifying the power of teaching, and inspiring everyone to learn together. This solution will empower teachers to use AI to provide personalized feedback and grading, create lesson plans, and develop rubrics. This will help teachers to scale their excellence and impact while still providing students with the active learning support they need in an increasingly competitive and digital world.

The partnership between Instructure and Khan Academy is set to provide teachers and students with an integrated Khanmigo experience that will help them make the most of generative AI. Instructure’s Learn Platform independent research team, along with Khan Academy’s educational research team, will jointly design research to measure the impact of these tools on student outcomes.

Steve Daly, Chief Executive Officer of Instructure, commented on the new partnership: “Generative AI, and tools like ChatGPT, have been a part of every conversation I have had this year with leaders, learners and instructors across our global education community. This partnership with Khan Academy and its deep expertise in generative AI will deliver a powerful solution for one of the world’s largest education communities – an intentional, secure and equitable experience promoting impactful learning experiences for all.”

Sal Khan, Founder & CEO of Khan Academy, also expressed his enthusiasm for the new collaboration: “Every educator we talk to seeks ways to address students using ChatGPT to write school essays and do homework. How can classrooms use AI tools while ensuring students develop critical thinking skills? We’re teaming up with Instructure to solve this. We’re using AI to show teachers the final essay and how the student got there. So students will be supported in developing critical writing and thinking skills while benefiting from AI designed for education. Khanmigo can also help with rubric creation and grading, saving teachers time. Students won’t get answers, but they will get appropriate levels of support.”

Instructure and Khan Academy will be providing Canvas and Khanmigo to a cohort of K-12 and Higher Ed design partners and early adopters during the 2024-2025 school year. Institutions interested in piloting this solution can join the Emerging AI Marketplace.

This collaboration between two of the biggest players in EdTech is sure to have a lasting impact on the way teachers and students learn. We look forward to seeing the results of the research conducted by the independent research teams at Instructure and Khan Academy.
