Education technology has taken a great leap forward with the acquisition of Scenes by Graphy, a software-as-a-service-based platform for content creators. Graphy, owned by Unacademy, is expanding its product offerings and reaching out to the creator ecosystem with the acquisition of Scenes, a Singaporean community-building platform.
The acquisition will help Scenes leverage Unacademy’s resource base, expertise and content library to further its growth. The terms of the transaction, including the deal size, remain undisclosed.
Founded in 2021 by Varun Mayya, Abhinav Arora, and Shashank Udupa, Scenes provides creators with an all-in-one solution to manage, moderate, and monetise their communities. It allows creators to sell their digital products, organise events, and process payments. The platform is used by top creators such as Sharan Hegde (1% Club), Sourav Jain (Digital Scholar), and more.
Commenting on the deal, Co-founder & CEO of Graphy, Sumit Jain, said: “The acquisition of Scenes is a strategic move to strengthen our leadership position in the creator economy. Scenes has built a robust community platform for creators, and this acquisition aligns with our vision of helping creators and educators develop and scale their online knowledge business.”
Scenes has raised about $50,000 in a seed round. Gaurav Munjal, Co-founder and CEO, is an investor in Scenes. Besides Munjal, Scenes counts Kunal Shah, Blume Ventures (and investor in Unacademy), Better Capital, Tanmay Bhat and Flipkart’s Kalyan Krishnamurthy as its backers. Scenes has a holding entity in Singapore called Avalonmeta Ventures Pte.
Varun Mayya, Co-founder and CEO of Scenes added: “Scenes has been an exciting journey. We’ve partnered with many large creators and businesses over the years. The Scenes product and customers could not have found a better home than Graphy.”
Launched in 2020 by Sumit Jain, Sushil Kumar, and Shobhit Bakliwal, Graphy empowers educators to scale their online brands and business by launching online courses and selling them via white-labelled websites and mobile apps. The company claims to have helped over 1,00,000 educators and creators undertake their online courses. It allows users to explore stories, ideas, books and original content through video, audio, images, and quizzes.
In October 2021, Graphy acquired Noida-based EdTech startup Spayee for $25 million. The latest acquisition marks the first buy for Unacademy since the SoftBank-backed EdTech unicorn bought Gate Academy in September last year.
This acquisition of Scenes by Graphy is a great opportunity for teachers and educators to expand their online knowledge businesses and create powerful communities. With the help of Unacademy’s resources, expertise, and content library, teachers can now reach more people and monetise their educational content more effectively.
