CodeHS, the leading platform for K-12 computer science education, is taking a big step to empower students of all backgrounds in the field of computer science. The company has recently launched its K-12 computer science curriculum designed to support Spanish-speaking English Language Learners.
This curriculum provides Spanish-speaking students with the opportunity to learn web design, cybersecurity, coding in science, introduction to Python, AP CSP, and more. The courses come with lesson slides, programming exercises, and reference documentation, all translated into Spanish. To adhere to industry standards, the program syntax will remain in English.
The curriculum allows Spanish-speaking students to succeed while learning the fundamentals of computer science and programming in the language they feel most comfortable with. It also enables teachers to teach blended-language computer science classes, with English and Spanish-speaking students studying alongside one another. CodeHS makes it easy for teachers and students to switch their default language.
Commenting on the launch, VP of Education, CodeHS, Evelyn Hunter, said: “Bridging the gap between language and coding opens doors to many opportunities for students of all backgrounds. At CodeHS, we’re excited to expand our K-12 computer science course to support blended-language classrooms.”
CodeHS Elementary is also available in Spanish, with lessons and student handouts that include Spanish-translated student-facing slides. Co-founded in 2012, CodeHS recognizes the diverse nature of classrooms and provides a curriculum tailored to meet the needs of all students. This update to foundational programming courses is made to help students program in a language they feel most comfortable with.
The company believes that in the 21st century, coding is a foundational skill and that every student should have access to quality education, regardless of language barriers. With its K-12 course in Spanish, CodeHS hopes to bridge this gap and continue to inspire students about the importance of coding in the technology-driven world.
